Independent reading lessons
In Key Stage 3, all students are required to have a reading book with them at all times and reading engagement and progress is monitored. Students enjoy time to read a book of their choice every Monday (and Friday for our Accelerated Reader groups). Students may bring in a book from home or borrow one from the school library. Our library hosts termly Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 reading challenges for those looking for some inspiration – and rewards! Students should read for 20 minutes a day at home.
“We cannot let a generation of children lose out on the benefits that reading can bring: inspiring the imagination; the comfort and escape of another world, and the very real and impactful literacy skills it supports. We must work together – authors and publishers, schools and families – to make sure every child has the safe space and access to books to start them on their reading journey.”
Francesca Simon, best-selling author and ambassador for the National Literacy Trust*
