We inspire students to achieve their best, by expecting the best of themselves and others. We ensure that all students are equipped with the characteristics, skills and knowledge to become lifelong learners who experience success in the future, whilst making a positive difference to the world as well-rounded citizens.
In an age where new technologies are developing exponentially and the average person is expected to have 5 different jobs within their working life, we need to prepare students for jobs that haven’t even been created, using technologies that have yet to be invented. Whilst we place great emphasis on the national curriculum, we are also developing the way in which our young people work so that they develop confidence, independence, resilience and ambition. We are seeking to provide a curriculum that not only promotes a wide breadth of knowledge with a rich cultural capital but also one which is sequenced cumulatively to promote learning links as well as a diverse approach and skill set to facilitate independence, thereby raising the aspiration and ambition for all our learners
The curriculum at Redruth School is coherently-planned, to develop students’ learning in a broad range of subjects and contexts, with clear progression between each key stage.
We recognise the essential contribution that a good level of literacy makes to the future life chances of our students and have therefore added a daily 30-minute literacy session. These sessions are carefully planned to suit the individual needs of the students with a different focus for each key stage. The main driver of Key Stage 3 literacy is reading and expansion of vocabulary. In Key Stage 4, students are exposed to non- fictional articles, financial literacy and mindfulness, to support their resilience and preparation for their final examinations.
The journey for students starts with a structured transition package from Key Stage 2 and opportunities to take part in Super Saturday taster days across a variety of subjects. Once in Year 7, students are engaged in a curriculum designed to enhance their literacy and numeracy skills, develop independent learning skills and study a wide range of subjects. In years 7, 8 & 9 the curriculum content includes opportunities to study local heritage and to develop the cultural capital of our young people.
Redruth School believes that the most effective way to raise attainment is to create a culture in which every student strives to create their best work every day with as many opportunities to succeed as possible. To this end, we offer a wide range of subjects within our Key Stage 3 program to enable a broad base from which to opt in Key Stage 4.
The curriculum at Key Stage 4 caters for students of all abilities and provides a diverse subject offer as well as an aspirational target driven expectation for all students. The school prides itself on ensuring that students achieve the necessary qualification and skills to be successful post 16 and to producing high performing, ambitious and motivated members of the community for the future. All students take English language, English literature, mathematics, computing and combined science and recognises its strength and specialism in sport with the majority of students studying successfully for a qualification in sport or sport science.
